Causes of Underweight

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Definition: The definition of underweight can be given as “a condition when body weight of an individual is 10-20% less than ideal body weight for his/her height, age and sex”. Underweight can also be defined if a person’s BMI (body mass index) is less than 18.5.

There are several causes of underweight. The following are the common causes of underweight in a person:

  1. A person may become underweight if the food intake is inadequate, both in quantity and quality. Quantity means the total calorie intake is less than calories burned (which is due to less amount of food consumption). Quality of food means consumption of proteins (should have all the essential amino acids in protein), fats (essential fatty acids should be adequate), carbohydrates, all the vitamins and minerals in adequate quantity as per expenditure of energy.
  2. The cause of underweight may also be consumption of fewer calories (food) in compare to the calorie expenditure, which may lead to energy deficit. The increase calorie expenditure may be due to increased physical activity or due to rise in body temperature or fever.
  3. Hormonal imbalances like hyperactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) can increase the metabolic rate to a large extent, which will cause increase need of energy or calorie (food). If food intake is not increased it may produce underweight individual.
  4. Many pathological conditions like fever, cancer, tuberculosis may be the cause of underweight. In these conditions the appetite is poor and but the energy needs are greatly increased, which leads to underweight.
  5. Certain psychological eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa may also cause underweight in individuals suffering from these problems. Anorexia nervosa is and obsession for slimming, where patient may not take food for the fear of gaining weight, even if they are very thin.

Wine and Barrett’s Esophagus

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Barrett’s esophagus is a condition of esophagus in which condition the normal epithelial lining of the esophagus is replaced by abnormal cells generally due to reflux (known as chronic GERD or gastro-esophageal reflux disease) of the stomach contents (mainly gastric acid and bile) to the esophagus. Some patients with reflux of the stomach contents to the esophagus may develop ulcer and due to ulcer the esophagus may become narrow and rarely some patients may develop esophageal cancer.

Wine seems to reduce and protect from development of Barrett’s esophagus, so is higher educational status (although the reason is not clear but thought to be related to wine drinking and college degree). Studies in US (California) involving patients with diagnosed Barrett’s esophagus found that the patients with Barrett’s esophagus had a 30 fold to 125 fold increased risk of developing esophageal cancer when compared to the general population.

The type of alcohol intake seem to be important from the study as the total alcohol consumption was not found to have significant association with the risk of Barrett’s esophagus. However, it was found that consumption of one glass of wine per day, on an average, and the risk of Barrett’s esophagus was much less in compare to non-drinkers. Wine drinkers are more likely to have college degrees and also they regularly take vitamin supplements than those who drink beer or liquor. A strong association was also observed between educational status and a low risk of Barrett’s esophagus.

One factor that may be important is the presence of compounds like polyphenol in red wines, which have important protective action on oxidative stress. The study concluded that drinking wine may reduce the oxidative damage caused by GERD, thereby decreasing the risk of esophagitis and Barrett’s esophagus.

Are Eye Creams a Scam?

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Many people out there put together anti aging regimens that make us look and feel younger, fresher, and more energized.  Of all of the anti aging products out there, a commonly misunderstood product is the eye cream.  An eye cream is often left second guessed by people as they buy products.  However, the eye cream may be the most important part of a skin care routine designed to make you look younger.

Eye creams are specifically formulated to treat the area of skin below your eyes.  This area of skin is the most frail and delicate part of skin on the human body, and it ages faster than any other piece of skin on the body.  In order to regain its thick, plump look, it needs to be treated with the most scientifically advanced ingredients.  Look for ingredients like haloxyl, (which also reduces dark under eye circles), argirelene, (called the best needle free alternative to botox,) and eyeliss.  Eyeliss is crucial at fighting the under-eye bags we get as we grow older, as well as deflating eye puffiness.

Your eyes are the window to your soul, as people often say.  Can you afford to have them looking tired, uninterested, and droopy?  If you haven’t thought about using a daily use eye cream, now is the time to start looking into it.

Keloids and Skin lightening Products

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Keloid is a type of scar. It is simply an over reaction of skin tissue during process of healing. Keloid occurs due to overgrowth of tissue at the site of a skin injury which has healed. Consistency of keloid is firm, rubbery and fibrous nodule, which may be shiny. The color of keloid generally varies from pink to flesh-colored or red to dark brown. Keloids scars are non-contagious, which may be accompanied by severe itchiness, sharp pains etc. In severe cases, it can affect movement of skin also.

It is very important not to confuse keloids with hypertrophy of healed scar. Hypertrophy scars are raised scars that do not grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound and this point distinguishes it from keloids.

Keloids can develop in any place where there is an abrasion. Keloids can be the result of pimples, insect bites, scratch, burns, or any other skin trauma that can cause abrasion. Keloid scars can also develop after surgery.

Treatment of keloid:

The most effective (although not successful in treating every keloids) is surgical removal of keloid. But the biggest drawback of surgical treatment of keloid is the chance of the surgical scar becoming keloid itself. The chance of surgical scar becoming keloid is more than 50%.

There are many other forms of treatment of keloids, which includes steroids, injections, covering of keloid with silicon gel, cryosurgery, radiation therapy, laser therapy, skin lightening products etc. are also used for treatment of keloid. Out of all the above laser treatment is emerging as a good alternative to surgery and latest approach is to combine laser therapy with steroid injections.

Treatment of keloid with drugs which are used for treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancers are being used these days. Drugs used are alpha-interferon, 5-fluorouracil, bleomycin etc. But the most important point to remember in treatment of keloid is that no treatment is successful (100%) in all cases of keloid.

Medical Refrigeration for Safety

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

For keeping many medical items safely (for preserving items properly) refrigerator is must in any medical setup. Medical setups like hospitals, nursing homes, diagnostic and research laboratories, clinical research organizations and in every field of medical research require medical refrigerators. Medical refrigerators generally provide CFC free refrigeration system and insulation. Medical refrigerators are easily available these days, due to the use of them in all the medical facilities.

Medical refrigeration is unique in its way as the medical refrigerators need to have some special features in them. The following special features should be there in a good quality medical refrigerator:

  1. Temperature of inside air should be maintained between +2ºC and +8ºC (unlike household refrigerators which maintain internal air temperature between +4ºC and +8ºC).
  2. Microprocessor digital temperature control with maximum/minimum memory for continuous monitoring of temperature between +2ºC and +8ºC.
  3. The door of the medical refrigerator has to be made of good quality and transparent glass.
  4. Digital display of temperature, humidity and provision of internal fluorescent light (which is not switched off when door is closed).
  5. Audio-visual alarm signal if there is any temperature deviation, with remote alarm terminals providing mains failure alarm signal.
  6. Automatic defrosting facility.
  7. Removable shelves.
  8. Multifunctional alarm system of the refrigerator.
  9. Locking facility of the door for the safety of the products inside with provision of more than one key.
  10. Sparkfree safe interior.

The medical refrigerators are used for different purposes in different medical setups. Some of the examples of the use of medical refrigerators are for preserving vaccines, for preserving various medicines in medical stores (including medicine shops), for safely storing blood in blood banks, in laboratories (both diagnostic as well as research laboratories) to keep different reagents and mediums safely for longer duration etc. and also many more uses.

Clenbuterol in Sports

Monday, June 29th, 2009

The history as well as present of sports is shadowed by the abuse of anabolic steroids for better performance. The use of (better to say abuse of) steroids in sports is against the spirit of games and sports, which is the universal brotherhood. If one brother cheats other brother by adopting illegal and unjust ways the spirit of universal brotherhood is lost.

Use of drugs like steroids (Clenbuterol, Winstrol, Deca Durabolin etc. and many more) are banned in sports, but unfortunately many sports persons still use them illegally. The uses of these anabolic steroids are easy due to their availability online. Anyone can buy Clenbuterol and other anabolic steroids online. But before using Clenbuterol and other anabolic steroids for any medical conditions one remember certain side effects they may cause (usually causes side effects if used for long duration).

The common and sometimes serious side effects of steroids are liver damage, gynecomastia, skin problems, increase blood cholesterol etc.

Liver damage is more common with oral steroids than with injectable steroids. To reduce side effects the steroids cycles should be of 6-8 weeks.

Gynecomastia is ‘development of male breast’ and a common concern among male steroids users. Gynecomastia (a common feminization symptom) can be prevented to some extent by use of steroids like Nolvadex or Arimidex.

Skin problems like acne can occur during steroid use, especially if the individual is predisposed to these conditions. To prevent acne problem frequent face and body washing using anti-bacterial or anti-acne soap are useful.

Uses of steroids can decreased level of high-density lipoprotein (good cholesterol) and increased level of low-density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) and have a negative impact on user’s cardiovascular health, which may predispose to heart failure and other heart troubles.

Steroid Abuse

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Steroids are the group of drugs which are most commonly abused, even many professional doctors. Anabolic steroids are very commonly abused in sports, especially high performance sports like football, baseball, athletics etc. In recent years even gentlemen’s game cricket is also in the same line with other sports in steroid abuse. The use of performance enhancing drugs was unheard of in cricket. But anabolic steroids abuse is most common in the field of body building, for quickly building big muscle mass in short duration of time. Body builders want to increase their muscle mass very quickly and they end up abusing anabolic steroids. Many well known personalities including many Holywood stars have used and abused steroids for their action movies.

Steroids are actually wonder drugs with life saving quality. They are used clinically when all other drugs fail in many diseased conditions. Each of the steroids is unique in their properties with many similarities among different steroids. There are dozens of different steroid and each one of them is unique in their own characteristics. Steroid profiles can help in learning more about individual steroids. It is imperative to read steroid profiles about each one to find out the specific information regarding its makeup, history, side effects, therapeutic uses and other characteristics.

If you have to read steroid profiles you should focus on some major aspects like the anabolic and androgenic characteristics of each steroids and also how are these properties in compare to other steroids, detail description about the side effects profile of individual steroids, history of the steroid to find out if there have been any serious adverse effects of the particular steroid, as well as in which forms the steroids can be taken e.g. orally, topically or intravenously.

Steroids in Olympics

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Many sports events including the highest sports event Olympics are shadowed by the abuse of anabolic steroids. The history of modern Olympic games is full of steroids (and other performance enhancers) use and abuse. The use of steroids has given a bad name to many of the Olympic events and also many other sports events. IOC (international Olympic committee) has banned the use of steroid in sports, as it gives undue advantage to the user and cause disparity in the sports competition. IOC started to test steroids in athletes only in the year 1982, although a full-scale drug testing program in the Olympics was started in 1972.

The commonly used steroids in Olympic and other sports events are Winstrol (Stanozolol), Deca Durabolin (Nandrolone), Methandrostenolone etc. to name a few.

There are a few advantages in winstrol in compared to other steroids. The advantages are the availability of winstrol in tablet form as it is very well absorbed orally from gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Many other steroids are available as injection form which may cause some problem. Winstrol is also available as suspension and also as depot preparation (for intra-muscular use). Stanozolol (Winstrol) has very little androgenic effect, but virilization and masculinization are still very common among female users (especially used by body builders), even at low doses.

The use of internet for purpose of marketing products including medicines has made it very simple and easy to buy many items including medicines like steroids online while sitting at the comfort of home. You can buy steroids from home sitting comfortably, without need to go out to the medical store nearby. Many people are opting to buy steroids online instead of buying it from nearby medical stores, like many other items that are sold online.

Steroids in Sports

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

The use (better to say abuse) of steroids in sports is still prevalent, despite ban on use of many steroids in sports by many national and international sports authorities like IAAF (international association of athletics federations). The use of steroid has become easier by all people including sports persons due to the availability of steroids over the net. You can buy steroids easily online. Steroids can be lifesaving drugs if used properly by the right person (professional doctors) at the right time, but it can cause life threatening complications if used by non professionals for the sake of building muscle mass or such activities as in the sports of high energy.

Anavar (oxandrolone) is one such steroid used and misused in the field of sports. There are some advantages of Anavar like its toxicity is not very high (in compare to other anabolic steroids), not very androgenic, mildly anabolic etc. It is an oral steroid. Anavar is only mildly androgenic and virilation is not much of a concern with this compound, unlike its peers. Musculinization and virilation of females may be a problem with many anabolic steroids, but fortunately it is a lesser problem with Anavar.

Anavar can cause fat loss (without any exercise) and so it is called a “fat-burning steroid”. Abdominal and visceral fats are mainly reduced (as found by a study). But one side effect of Anavar is weight gain, which if gained may be permanent weight gain. Due to many advantages that Anavar offers, its use are more common among females (has advantages and lesser side effects).
